In this project you are going to learn about how small networks and the internet work and how they were first made. You will learn about some of the components that form the internet.

Unit Lessons
Lesson 1: Introduction to LANs and WANs
In the early days of computing we used cables to connect computer in the same room or building together, as things progressed we used cables to connect computers in different buildings together and not that network of connections have expanded and protocols have been formed to create the internet. Activity: Your teacher will illustrate this on the board, or you can watch this video.
The Internet is a global network of millions of computers connected together.
The World Wide Web refers to all the webpages / Information on the the internet that we can locate and browse. We normally use a web browser such as Google Chrome to view web pages. Hypertext markup Language HTML is used in the design of webpages to allow compatible communication between computers to allow computers to correctly display webpages through web browsers.
Task: Try this code in Notepad:

</html>
When you have entered the HTML code from above; click File > Save As > Give the file a name > then after the . change the file extension to htm ( Example: mywebsite.htm). Locate the file you saved and double click on it to check out how it looks in your web browser.

Task: The website www.howstuffworks.com is produced by a company in America and is saved on a host server based in Atlanta
in America. Type www.howstuffworks.com in to your browser then using your stopwatch (on your phone, watch or tablet) time how long it takes from pressing Enter until the page is loaded. (This should be about 1 second).
The website you have just loaded is saved on a computer in Atlanta in America, now look on the map to find where Atlanta is located in America.
Task: Draw an illustration of how the data is travelling from your computer in this classroom, to the server hosting the website www.howstuffworks.com and how the requested website data might travel back to your computer. You drawing should include the following components.

And other component that you can think of

LANs and WANs
There are two main types of network:
- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
WAN: A WAN covers a large geographical area. Most WANs are made from several LANs connected together.
The internet is a WAN.
A school network is usually a LAN.
LANs are often connected to WANs, for example a school network could be connected to the internet.
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web (WWW or 'web' for short) is the part of the internet that you can access using a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. Web pages are mainly written in HTML language (Hypertext Markup Language)
Accessing web pages - You can access a website or web page by typing its URL (Uniform Resource Locator) into the address bar of your browser. An example of a URL is http://www.bbc.co.uk.
Internet Service Providers - ISPs provide access to the internet.
Data transfer
Data traveling on the internet travels through cables. Over long distances Fibre Optic cables are used.
Data only travels a short distance when you are connected wireless, after the short distance traveled the data reaches the sender/receiver unit, the data then runs through cables.
What is a server
A server is like a big computer that is used to control all the other computers on the network. It allows files and external devices such as printers to be shared, it manages user accounts and logins and in many cases manages the LANs connection to the internet.
Hubs and Switches
Hubs and switches allow components of a network to plug in together. A hub simply creates the connection and allows the data to pass through. A switch allows the connection and manages the data that travels through, the switch forwards the data to the correct place.
