Key terminology
Steganography: the science or art of hiding messages in pictures.
Directory: A technical name for a folder. The plural is directories. File extension: this is the second part to a file name that tells us what the file is about, or which application can open it. Wildcard: a symbol that means 'anything', so '*.txt' means 'anything that ends in .txt' Batch file: a simple file in a Windows operating system that contains one or more commands. Shell script: a simple file in a Mac or Linux based operating system that contains one or more commands. |
Activities
- MI5 have asked you to research some secret code techniques before allowing you on to the team. You should read about steganography and attempt to find the messages in these pictures. Once you get the hang of it, you should try and create your own, MI5 might need to use these techniques themselves!
- You've already learnt some command line instructions, now's the time to practise.
- Can you find out what application created these files?
- How can you read the content of the file without having the original application that created them?
