Project Overview
In this project you are going to learn about how computers make decisions based on a Boolean process, how flowcharts can be used to plan tasks. Your end task will be to produce a quiz on scratch.
Task Overview
- Task 1: Develop skills to use some common shortcuts
- Task 2: Show different methods of saving work and show understanding of cloud storage.
- Task 3: Show an understanding of different file types
- Task 4: Develop basic problem shooting skills
- Task 5: Expand terminology vocab
- Task 6: Using Dashboard
Task 1: Develop skills to use common shortcuts
Shortcuts are a quicker way of doing tasks, they are developed from looking at how people generally use the computer and time taken in each action. For example it is often quicker to use the keyboard for a selection rather than taking your hand on the keyboard to use the mouse. Below are come common shortcuts:
Ctrl C = Copy
Ctrl V = Paste
Ctrl X = Cut - this will place the item on your clipboard ready to paste
Ctrl - Z = Undo
Ctrl - A = Select All
Ctrl - + = Zoom
Alt - Tab = Scroll through open applications
In your web browser
Ctrl + Mouse scroll wheel = Zoom - This is good on web browsers
Ctrl+N = Open a new window
Ctrl+T = Open a new tab (if your browser supports tabs)
Ctrl+W = Close the current window/tab
Ctrl+R = Refresh
Alt+← = Back (Last Page)
Alt+→ = Forward

Task 2: Show different methods of saving work and show understanding of cloud storage.
When you save your work on your D: Drive C: Drive then it will only be saved on the computer that you saved it on, you will not be able to access this work from any other computer.
If you save your work on the desktop the work is then being saved
Cloud Storage
If you save your work on cloud storage, Google Drive, then it is saved on Googles Computers (Servers) at Google in the US or at one of their other data centers around the world ( See map ), this data can then be accessed from any device through a web browser or the google drive application.
To save on your google drive from the school computers you may have to first temporarily save the file in the folder you should have created on your desktop called "My temp files". Once you have saved the file in this desktop folder you can then drag and drop it into your Google drive. This is because that may applications do not have the option to save directly to Google Drive. Remember that the temporary folder on your desktop will be deleted at the end of each term so DO NOT use this to store your work.

Task 3: Show an understanding of different file types
What is a file extension?
All the documents you save have a file extension, this is the information shown at the end of the file after the dot . for example mypetdog.jpg would be a picture, we know this because the .jpg file extension shows the file is a jpeg picture. When using windows the file extension will not show as standard but can be switched on, but window does show the file type when viewed in list format. Most files are also recognisable by the icon.
Why is it important to know this?
Different types of files work with different software and contain different types of data, it will save you time by knowing which software or application is the most appropriate one to use for each type of file and task you want to do. You may also have to change the file type depending on the task you are doing, for example a picture you have create in Photoshop with a file extension of .psd would need to be converted to a .jpg (or other) file type if you want to post it on your dashboard e-portfolio page.
Homework: Design and personalise your Dashboard Computing Homepage.

Task 4: Develop basic problem shooting skill
Sir my keyboard is not working! Miss my computer wont turn on!
